About Us

Accents For Her, a Women's Boutique, has been providing Unique Clothing and Accessories for the Distinctive Woman since 1985. Owner Kay Gilbert purchased the store in 2001 after shopping there for 12 years. Here's how it all came about: Kay had been telling her husband that when she retired in a few years, she wanted to start a women's boutique. Her husband was pretty overwhelmed with the idea, but didn't say anything. Every time they went on vacation, Kay would sniff out the boutiques in the area, and upon finding one, would frequently say "yeah...I'd like to have one something like this one day." Frankly, this scared her husband! He quietly hoped she'd forget the whole thing. But she didn't.

Then, in 2001, the day before Valentine's Day, her husband stopped by her favorite little boutique - Accents For Her - to pick up something off of layaway for her Valentine's Day gift. While chatting with the salesperson, he told her that Kay just loved the boutique...and in fact, wanted to own one just like it when she retired in a couple of years. Much to her husband's surprise, the salesperson said she was the owner, and that it was for sale. That night, while they were having an early Valentine's Day dinner, he shared the news with her. She couldn't believe it was for sale. And it turned out that the owner was willing to owner finance it. That was February, and in June of that year, Kay purchased her favorite little boutique. She kept working her full time job at the state, and relied heavily on the 3 gals who had been working there for a while (who fortunately stayed on to help her). She would stop by the store before and after her job, and of course on weekends. Two years later, she retired from her job at the state for 30 years...and now runs the store full time.

Kay has an eye for the unique, the different, and loves going to market to find unique apparel and accessories that you just won't find in department stores. In fact, she wanted to be an interior designer when she went to college. But frustrated by the fact that "she couldn't draw", she changed majors. Her husband would tell you that she's awesome with colors, and buys all sorts of eclectic pieces of furniture and works of art...which always go together...but which he NEVER would have picked out on his own! :-)

But back to the story. Every woman has experienced the embarrasing situation of spending a lot of time shopping for just the perfect outfit for a special occassion...and upon arriving at the party, wedding, special event, or whatever...seeing someone else with the exact same outfit. That happened to Kay several times before she stumbled onto Accents For Her some years ago. Ever since then, her colleagues would clamor over her unique apparel, and beg her to tell them where she found these stylish, unique separates and accessories. Not wanting everyone in the world to start shopping at her secret little boutique, Kay would always just say, "Oh...I got them at this cute little boutique!"

After owning the store for 5 years, Kay decided it was time to put up a web site, so more women than just locals would have the opportunity to find Unique Clothing and Accessories for the Distinctive Woman. In fact, she has several customers who live out of state, but frequently come to Denver on business. And they always come shopping at Accents For Her when they come to town. They have been asking for years that she put up a site. We at Accents For Her hope you enjoy shopping on-line, and hope you'll have the same sensation that Kay did when she first found the store - "What a fun, unique little boutique!"

There's several thousand items in the store, and so far, we have only put a small percentage of them on the web site. So, bear with us as we go through the process of slowly adding more and more items to our web site. As you may have noticed, we are permitted to show Brighton merchandise on our site, but they ask that if you see something you would like to purchase, that you call the store to make your purchase. For every $200 you spend at our store, you receive a $10.00 award certificate to redeem on your next visit to our site (or to our store, should you come in person.) There's no limit!
